How do dental implants work in replacing missing teeth?
Dental implants are one of the most popular methods of replacing missing teeth. They are typically made from titanium, which is a solid and durable metal. The implant is placed into the jawbone, and over time it fuses with the bone to create a strong and proper foundation for a replacement tooth.
After the implant has bonded with the jawbone, a small post, called an abutment, is placed on top of it. This is what will ultimately support the replacement tooth. In some cases, the abutment may be placed at the time of implant surgery. In other cases, it may be placed after the implant has had time to heal and bond with the bone.
After the abutment is in place, the replacement tooth can be attached to it. This tooth is known as a crown and is made to match your natural teeth in color and shape.
Why choose dental implants for tooth replacement?
Dental implants are one of the more effective ways to restore missing teeth. They are strong and durable and can last for many years with proper care. In addition, they look and function just like natural teeth. With implant-supported teeth, you can eat the foods you love and smile confidently!

Dental Implants - Dr. Weimar
Hi! I am Dr. Rick Weimer, and I would like to provide you with some basic information about dental implants. Dental implants are titanium cylinders that take the place of a root of a tooth, they can replace a single tooth, they can be used to replace several teeth or all the teeth in an arch. This is one of the dental implants, and what it looks like – this is an oversized example – things that stands out to people are the threads, the threads doesn’t mean they are screwed into place, that’s the way they are held in place. What ends up happening, is your body grows bone that locks into these threads and holds it in place, a dental implant procedure is a small surgical procedure, that can be done in as little as 15 to 30 minutes with a patient leaving with several stitches that dissolve within the course of a week. Some of the more common questions we get with, patients about dental implants are number 1: of course does it hurt? Number 2 is: will I miss any work? Typically, people are taking just, ibuprofen or Tylenol the day of the appointment and directly after the surgical procedure and they’re not usually missing any work at all, a lot of times people will come in, in the afternoon and the next day go to work without a problem. One of the other things that we should mention is that if you think that you are a candidate for a dental implant, if you would like to find out if it is a possibility for you, we do offer a free consultation of x-rays to assess how an implant might work for you, we have a bit of experience with this, having placed about 3000 implants over the course of 17 years. So we would love to hear from you! Thanks a lot.
FAQs
Q: What Is A Dental Implant?
A: A dental implant is a form of dental restoration that involves surgically implanting an implant post into the jawbone, attaching an abutment to the implant post, and finally adding a dental prosthetic (dental crown) to the abutment. The implant post that is surgically implanted into the jawbone will create a sturdy and stable foundation for your dental crown while also promoting jawbone health. You can elect one dental implant to replace a single tooth or multiple implants to replace several teeth. Dental implants can also be used for implant-supported dentures and bridges.
Q: How Long Does It Take To Get A Dental Implant?
A: The entire dental implant process, from start to finish, will take several months. It could take longer if you do not have sufficient jawbone to support a dental implant and must undergo a bone grafting procedure first. Also, any existing oral health problems must be addressed before undergoing your dental implant procedure. Once your oral health is in a state that is acceptable for a dental implant, it will be surgically placed. The healing process will take several weeks to a few months, during which your jawbone will fuse to the implant. Once this is complete, your tooth prosthetic will be placed.
Q: Is The Dental Implant Process Painful?
A: Getting a dental implant does not hurt. A local anesthetic will be used to make sure you remain comfortable as the implant is surgically implanted into your jaw. We also offer sedation options if you are experiencing anxiety about the procedure or if you just want to be in a more relaxed state. Once your procedure is complete, you could feel discomfort as you heal. This pain should not be significant and can often be handled with the application of ice and the use of an over-the-counter pain medication.
Q: How Long Will My Dental Implant Last?
A: A dental implant should last a lifetime when properly cared for. The implanted post fuses with your jawbone to provide an incredibly strong and durable restoration. Caring for your dental implant requires nothing more than maintaining good oral health via regular brushing and flossing to help keep issues like decay and gum disease from forming. Also, making regular visits to your dentist so they can monitor the state of your implant will ensure that, if there are any signs of failure, it can be addressed before it progresses. Remember that the dental crown attached to the implant likely will not last as long and could require replacement every 10-15 years.
Q: Are Dental Implants Expensive?
A: The dental implant cost will vary based on factors such as how many implants you are getting. A dental implant will be more costly than a bridge or denture. This is due to several reasons, including the fact that the implant process is surgical. However, if you are looking at the long-term affordability of dental implants, they are more cost-efficient than dentures and dental bridges. While these other restorations require replacement occasionally, your dental implant should not.
Q: Are Dental Implants A Better Option Than A Bridge or Denture?
A: While it likely will depend on your preference and individual need, many dentists consider dental implants the “gold standard” for tooth replacement. While a bridge or denture rests above the gumline, a dental implant replaces the entire tooth, including the missing tooth’s root. Because a dental implant is surgically implanted into the jawbone, it also promotes jawbone health. This is something other options cannot do. A dental implant will also last longer and be more cost-effective over time.
