What is sedation dentistry?
Sedation dentistry is a procedure that uses medication to help patients feel comfortable and relaxed during dental treatments. Depending on the level of sedation used, it can also be referred to as sleep dentistry or pain-free dentistry.
Why is sedation dentistry used?
Sedation dentistry is used for patients who experience fear or anxiety when visiting the dentist. It can also benefit people with medical conditions that might make it difficult to sit still for long periods, such as Parkinson’s disease or cerebral palsy.
What types of sedation are offered at Weimar Family & Implant Dentistry?
Several types of sedation are used at our office, including:
- Nitrous oxide sedation. Patients who cannot arrange transportation or are looking for fast sedation may want to opt for nitrous oxide sedation. This is the use of a gas that is odorless, colorless, and easily reversed with oxygen. A mask is worn over the nose, and a specific amount of gas is administered to the patient for almost immediate relaxation. Patients feel at ease and relaxed, and the sedation gas is completely removed from the body at the end of the procedure with oxygen administration.
- Oral conscious sedation. Dr. Weimar will prescribe a pill for patients to take before their appointment. This type of sedation will enable patients to follow instructions, answer questions, and stay awake during the procedure while allowing them to feel relaxed from start to finish. As the effects of sedation last for a few hours, patients must arrange transportation to and from the office for their treatments.
- Local anesthetic. When combined with oral sedation, local anesthetics ensure pain-free dentistry for patients worried about visiting the dentist’s chair. Dr. Weimar is excited to offer a specialized local anesthetic known as “The Wand.” This computer-controlled device administers anesthesia directly to an area, numbing the area in preparation for treatment. It eliminates the need for numbing injections, making it a more positive patient experience.
