Here Is What Could Be Causing Your Loose Dentures

When you first received your dentures, they were a true gift of modern dental technology. They fit great. They allowed you to chew your food without issue. That was a while ago, though, and now you aren’t quite as happy with your dentures. They have become loose-fitting over time and now are causing you problems. Dr. Richard Weimar and the team at Weimar Family and Implant Dentistry in Maple Grove, Minnesota, would like to share some reasons why this may have happened. and how you can fix it.

The following are a few reasons for this. While this is not a comprehensive list of all the reasons your dentures could become loose-fitting, these are a few common reasons.

Denture Quality and Fit

Poorly fitted dentures or those made from low-quality materials are more likely to become loose over time.  When visiting your dentist and getting your new dentures fit, it is essential to inform the dentist of anything you may be feeling which indicates they are not properly fit. If the denture does not fit properly at initial placement, chances are the fit will worsen as time goes on. It may loosen and slide around. The denture could put excessive pressure on your gums, leading to irritation. This irritation could, over time, lead to the gums shrinking, leading to looser-fitting dentures.

It’s important to have dentures properly fitted and periodically evaluated by a dental professional to ensure a good fit.

Weight Loss or Gain

Weight loss or gain can affect the fit of dentures. When a person loses weight, especially in the facial area, the dentures may become loose. Conversely, weight gain can alter the contours of the mouth, making dentures fit improperly. When your dentures become loose, you must be careful because they can rub the gums and lead to sores on the gums and hard palate. This can make everyday life quite uncomfortable, leading to the individual’s reluctance to continue wearing their denture. If your dentures become loose due to weight loss, it will be important to identify the reason for the weight loss and also use some dental adhesive until a long-term plan can be formed.

Aging

There are so many things that are out of our control as we age. Changes that alter how we look, how healthy we are, and even how big our mouths are. When we age, the gums can start to shrink, the jawbone can begin to recede, and teeth can become loose. Any of these changes can lead to dentures that have a less secure fit.
