Even if you’re entirely devoted to practicing solid oral hygiene, anyone can damage a tooth or experience tooth decay. In the past, getting a dental crown was a lengthy process because patients had to wait for their custom-made crown to arrive at their dentist’s office. However, advances in modern dentistry have brought us CEREC dental crowns, which can be placed on the same day as your appointment.
Dental crowns cover your whole tooth, almost serving as armor. These custom-made crowns serve a number of different functions. They make your smile more appealing but can also support damaged teeth and prevent infections. Crowns also help prevent bacteria from spreading to other teeth when you’ve successfully treated an infection.
As a society, we’re becoming more accustomed to quick solutions. Waiting weeks for a crown can be frustrating, especially if the affected tooth is visible in your smile. Dental crowns can be used to cap:
CEREC stands for Chairside Economical Restoration of Esthetic Ceramic. This process uses computer-aided manufacturing (CAM) and computer-aided design (CAD) to construct materials used for dental restoration.
Computer-aided technology is used to make precise measurements of a patient’s gums and teeth. Rather than traditional impression tools, this technology creates a 3D image of the mouth using an intraoral scanner. The digital scan is then uploaded into software specialized for this purpose. The software creates a model the dentist can manipulate to create customized crowns.
Once the scan is finalized, it’s sent to a milling machine at the same location. This machine takes 15-20 minutes to carve the crown from a ceramic block. The whole process only takes one to two hours. The patient is then able to leave with their crown securely in place over their tooth. There’s no need for a follow-up appointment unless the patient experiences other problems.
Older dental technologies required that a temporary crown be placed on a patient’s tooth while the dentist’s office waited for the permanent crown to arrive from the lab. This process could take weeks when you factor in having to make time in a busy schedule to visit the dentist’s office a second time. With same-day dental crowns, the need for a temporary crown is eliminated.
Another benefit is that the dentist doesn’t have to use putty to make an impression of your teeth and gums. The camera wand used to create impressions for CEREC crowns is much more comfortable for the patient.
