Many Issues of Gum Disease

Gum disease is more serious that people generally assume it to be. Many people mistakenly think that gum disease only affects the gum tissue and can be easily taken care of. Unfortunately, this is a misconception that can cause people to underestimate the potential harm diseased gum tissue. While gum disease does have solves, it needs to be found quickly, so the progression does not worsen. Gum disease starts in the gums, but can travel to the jawbone, and eventually deteriorate your jaw. Because the gums are so closely linked to the circulatory system and they are so susceptible, if they are infected, other parts of the body can easily become infected. Here are a just a few of the conditions that have been linked to gum diseases:

Diabetes

Diabetes and gum disease have a very strong connection. However, this does not mean, gum diseases cause diabetes. The two conditions may share the link of excessive inflammation in the body. If you have diabetes or gum disease, you should be aware of treatments available and begin them as soon as possible. Speak to your doctor about your preexisting health conditions prior to undergoing a treatment as they may affect one another.

Heart Disease

Gum disease it can infiltrate the body, causing heart disease to occur when you go without treatment. Gum disease and heart disease are closely linked to each other. Some findings indicate that having gum disease treatment could minimize effects from heart disease. A possible explanation for the relationship between the two diseases is that bacteria found in the gums can travel through the circulatory system to other parts of the body and cause inflammation.

Esophageal Cancer

There has been a found link of gum disease bacteria to esophageal cancer. According to the finding, those with diseased gum tissue have higher likelihoods of developing esophageal cancer than those with healthy gum tissue. The esophagus is a sensitive and susceptible part of the body, so if bacteria is contracted from, it can cause major health problems.

If you believe you have gum disease in any form, you should seek dental treatment immediately. If you have yet to seek treatment, schedule an appointment with your doctor. There are procedures you can undergo that will help with your gum diseases, such as laser gum therapy. Ask your doctor if this is a procedure they regularly preform on their patients. Your dentist will also be able to walk you through more information on treatment methods available for your gum disease.
