Natural Teeth Whiteners: Food Edition

It is known how badly sugars effect our teeth. Soda breaks down the enamel, candy creates cavities and decay…but are there any foods that actually benefit our teeth health? You may be surprised to know that there are foods that good for our teeth! If you want to know what you could be eating instead of foods that promote negative oral health, here is a basic list that will get you on the right track, approved by the ADA.

Cheese: All the cheese heads are in luck! Cheese is one of the top foods that benefit teeth health! When you eat cheese, the pH raises in your mouth and lowers the risk of tooth decay. The protein and calcium found in cheese aid with keeping enamel strong, and the nutrients help your teeth strength, too.

Yogurt: Yogurt, like cheese has a lot of protein and calcium, which help the strength of teeth. On top of that, yogurt also is high in probiotics, which is good bacteria. These good bacteria overcrowd the mouth not allowing for bad bacteria to infiltrate, causing decay.

Greens: Leafy greens are always on the top of food lists in nutrition, but they also help your teeth! Leafy greens, particularly dark greens like kale and spinach promote oral health and are full of vitamins. Greens are also high in calcium and other vitamins and folic acid, which are a great benefit to treating gum disease. Greens will never go out of style for health.

Celery: While celery is known to be high in water content, the fibrous food acts like a natural toothbrush while you eat it. This is great for oral health, because it removes bacteria and food particles from your teeth. Celery also is a good source of vitamins A and C, which are also antioxidants! Antioxidants promote overall body health, so it is definitely a food to add to your list.

Moving forward, you have new foods to add to your grocery list that are great for your teeth. If you would like to find out more on healthy foods or foods great for your oral health, consult your doctor on what may improve your oral hygiene.
