Dental implants need a solid jawbone to anchor into, and not everyone has enough of it by the time they’re ready for treatment. Bone grafting is the step that makes implants possible for patients who’d otherwise be told they don’t qualify.
Once a tooth is missing, the jawbone in that area no longer gets stimulation from a tooth root, and it naturally begins to thin over time. The longer a gap goes unaddressed, the more bone volume tends to be lost.
Bone material, taken either from the patient’s own body or a donor source, is processed into granules and placed at the treatment site. Those granules encourage new bone to form in the volume needed to support an implant. When guided tissue regeneration is part of the plan, a biocompatible membrane covers the graft to protect it during healing.
Many patients recover with surprisingly little discomfort, and sedation dentistry is available for anyone who wants extra comfort during the procedure itself. Once enough new bone has formed, dental implants and the final crown can be placed in the office.
Needing a bone graft isn’t a dead end. It just means your treatment plan accounts for rebuilding the foundation first, and plenty of patients who weren’t initially candidates for implants become candidates after grafting.
The only way to know whether grafting applies to you is through an evaluation, often alongside a CBCT scan that shows exactly how much bone you have to work with. Schedule a consultation with Weimar Family & Implant Dentistry to find out what your path to implants actually looks like.
